What the Site Is All About.

<---------Dr. Gleason (the professor)

Advertising is a realm that is unfathomly huge. It's everywhere and even if you don't notice it it's still probably there. With that said I'd like to mention that this Web site is in no way complete and does not thoroughly cover the whole aspect of advertising. Instead I created this site to exemplify just how wierd advertising can get. Who'da thunk that Pizza Hut would slap an ad on a Russian rocket? When more businesses who sell the same product are gaining in numbers then so are their strategies in trying to get their product into your head--the advertising campaigns get wierder, more unique or even more subliminal. In this site you will be introduced to some articles about advertising gone mad, followed by some photos I took of advertising right here in Oshkosh, Wisc. Don't forget to check out some of the useful links in the sidebar. Thanks for visiting this site!
Sincerely,
Laura

With ads everywhere, U.S. culture is reshaped

A wonderful story by Tom Long of the Detroit News
details how ads can sneak into the everyday lives of people and how they affect children. The article was published in 2005 and touches base on many of the points I want to elaborate within this blog.

Street pole advertising is free!!!

Advertising in Space

"In 1993, a Gerogia-based company, Space Marketing Inc., announced plans to launch square mile size billboards made from mylar sheets into low orbit. Logos about the size of the moon would have been visible to millions of people on earth. Strong public opposition caused them to withdraw their plan."

I haven't found much more information regarding the truth of what you see above but I have found extensive information about Pizza Hut advertising on a Russian space craft.

Live Advertisment

The first live advertisment was performed before the start of a play, Tues. April 11 at Piccadilly's Comedy Theater in London. The ad promotes tourism in London and is scheduled to be performed before audiences in other cities as well.

( an exerpt from the article: Theatergoers Sit Through 'Live Ads' Before Plays by By OLIVER STEEDS and CHARLOTTE SECTOR)

"Theatre is one of the last bastions of non-commercial zones so this is breaking new ground," said James Bidwell, chief executive of Visit London. "We wanted to do something which would create excitement, some inspiration and attract people to London and also to focus on theatre."

1 Donation Bricks at Menominee Park

Ahh. Nothing like the philanthropical action of donating your money to help build a playground. These are donation bricks located at the enterance of the Little Oshkosh playground area inside Menominee Park. This is a great form of advertisment! A business can look good by being so generous to donate its money but then also gets a permanent advertisment! If one donated a certain amount of money to the playground then any name could be put on a brick. Take a look at the photo and notice the the differences in how people utilized this option.

2 tshirts

If you click on the photo you will be able to enlarge it and view the ads that are on the t-shirts.
The t-shirt on the top left is for Wingers a popular college bar in Oshkosh. Advertising continues to be a very thorough and popular form of advertising. This photo is of the store front window of a business that creates t-shirts advertising.

3 scoopie

What the heck are these people doing in the road??
Well this photo was shot during the Childrens Day parade in Oshkosh.
Look closely to the left of the photo and you will see the likeness of a giant walking icecream cone. His name is scoopy and he a character created by Culvers custard.
Think about it.
A company creates a character to pertain to a child's interest.
Then it makes that character into a mascot and sends it out to wave and hug children at parades.Hmmmmm

4 Quaker Oats sign

This advertisment is an old relic from the days when building ads were painted rather than attached with billboard. This ad is admired by many Oshkosh residents for its nastalgic quality. I also ate Quaker oatmeal for breakfast this morning.

5 mini blimp.

This is a real photo shot at EAA Kids Day in March. I have no idea if this ad is for an actual blimp or if this ad is suposed to be for the mini blimp shown here. Imagining what kind of event would call for a mini blimp to be hovering around is interesting though.

6 Race Truck

Cars are everywhere these days and putting advertisment on a car is like shooting fish in a barrel ,someone is bound to see it. This truck is for Race Office Products Center on Main Street in Oshkosh.

7 BumperSticker

A bumper sticker can do a great job of telling the person tailgaiting you that you like to eat GU gel and/or where you got your tattoo.

8 Lennon Billboard

People traveling south down Main Street have probably seen this ad for Kathy Lennon. Her platinum locks are not hard to miss.

9 Titan Stadium

J.J. Keller & Associates is a Fox Valley-based company that consults businesses on safety and regulation compliance. The company donated a huge chunk of cash for the renovation efforts at Titan Stadium and in return it received a nice permanent advertisment, the name of the field.
